Transitions

Back in the day when I was in the throes of my yoga training, I would travel across the country following my teachers to workshops and weeklong trainings. The intense self-study and deep connections formed with fellow students often meant re-entry to family life and the quotidian was challenging.

These past few weeks, as I transition from my half-year overseas back to the US, most especially because the world transformed during that period, reminds me of that sense of displacement.

And while my personal circumstances are particular to me, we are all collectively facing the challenges of transition. As New York starts to progressively open, we are asked to adapt, transform, and shift.

As yogis, we know transitions are where the real work lies. It’s the pause between the inhale and the exhale, the movement from one asana to another, where we often lose focus but where a revelation or truth resides. What’s necessary during the pause or the transition is an even deeper awareness and sensitivity. We are invited to engage more deeply and like the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, transform and refine.
